After a successful year of living more providently, it’s time to share the goodness. The goal this month is to share what you’ve accomplished this year with others, giving gifts from your garden, home canned or home made gifts or gifts that will help others to live more providently.
With the holidays, it’s very easy to find ourselves exceeding family budgets and spending a lot on gifts. But the most meaningfulgifts come from the heart and have nothing to do with money. So let’s keep it simple. Share what you’ve learned this year, share the bounty of your garden, share your talents.
How about home-sewn, knitted or crocheted gifts? Or coupons to teach a skill? Who doesn’t love home-canned jams, jellies, pickles and relishes? These gifts from the heart can be so much more meaningful and cost little or nothing. If you really want to spend money, consider giving gifts that help family and friends to be more self-reliant: register them for classes to learn a new skill, give a book on gardening or food preservation, make or buy a ready-made 72-hour kit to give, or buy a tool or gadget for provident living (garden tools, wheat grinder, dehydrator, canning and other food prep tools.) You can get a good food-storage starter kits through ProvidentLiving.org or other preparedness websites.
Whatever you do, don’t let the frenzy of the holiday and the pressure to spend detract from this season of love and gratitude and creating warm memories with family and friends. I hope this season is filled with happiness, warmth and a glad anticipation for the new year to come.
